Potato Farm Roofing

Let's talk about roofing for potato storage and packing.

For potato storage buildings, the roof has to hold high humidity inside without dripping it back onto the pile.

Why is that hard?

Because warm, moist air hitting a cold deck condenses, and a thermal bridge anywhere in the roof becomes a leak somewhere else.

There are several reasons to treat a potato storage roof as a specialty system.

You're going to learn everything you need to know about potato facility roofing, so you can make an educated decision about your next project.

POTATO ROOFING DETAILS

What is Potato Farm Roofing?

Potato farm roofing covers long-term storage buildings, packing sheds, and processing facilities. Storage roofs are humidity-managed envelopes, typically closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (SPF) or insulated metal panels (IMP) that provide continuous R-value with no thermal bridges. Packing and processing roofs are usually TPO or modified bitumen on tapered insulation.

Typical Potato Storage Roof System

  1. SPF or Insulated Metal Panel
  2. Protective Coating (for SPF)
  3. Vapor Retarder
  4. Sealed Perimeter & Penetrations
  5. Reflective Top Surface

Benefits of a Properly Built

Potato Storage Roof

Condensation Control

Continuous insulation eliminates
the cold spots that cause drip onto the pile.

Crop Quality Protection

Stable humidity and temperature reduce mold, sprouting, and shrink loss.

Energy Efficiency

Reflective surfaces and continuous insulation lower refrigeration and ventilation load.

Long Service Life

SPF systems can last 30+ years with coating maintenance every 10 to 15 years.
